The Refectory

The monks ate all their meals here. The lay brothers had their own refectory in the ground floor of the West Range, and the kitchens, built between the two buildings, served food into both.
During meals, no talking was allowed. One of the monks read aloud - the Rule of St. Benedict or the life of a saint.
Originally, the food was vegetarian, but by the 15th century, many abbeys allowed the eating of meat.
Would you find it easy to spend most of the day in silence? Would it help you to concentrate on living a pure life?
