The Chapter House

This was the abbey's parliament, law court and administrative centre.
The monks met here every day, and the building gets its name from the reading of a chapter of the Rule of St. Benedict to open every meeting.
At first, meetings were concerned with internal orgaisation and discipline, but as Fountains Abbey acquired more and more land, they must have become more like board meetings of a big company.
The abbey became very rich. The monks were sworn to personal poverty. Would it be easy to live like that?
