This huge building was begun immediately the first monks arrived at Fountains in 1132. They went on adding to it until the 15th century.

The style of the older parts is very simple. There is little decoration, and that was made with axes by the monks themselves.

Later, as the abbey became rich, it employed skilled stonemasons to extend and beautify the building.

Is a beautiful building a help or a hindrance to worship?
