This was the only part of the abbey open to women.
The bodies of important people brought for burial in the abbey grounds rested here until their funeral service was held.
There were a number of Cistercian nunneries in Britain, ruled by abbesses, where communities of women followed the same Rule.
Does this arrangement tell us anything about the Cistercians' attitude to women?
