On the right hand side you can see windows at three levels. The lowest level is the oldest. Here the windows are narrow slits - safe, but cold and dark inside. Further up are sets of windows added when the castle became a home, hundreds of years after it was first built. They are much too big for fighting - it is easy to shoot in through them.
Even these windows had to be fitted into the space available in the wall of the keep, which was designed for fighting, not living comfortably. By the 16th century, some lords were adding new sections to their castles so that they could become grand houses, never intended for defence.
