Because this window is wide on the inside, there is room for an archer to bend his bow and shoot out easily. He can stand clear of the window while he is loading an arrow. He can move from side to side to see more of the ground outside the window. As time went by, the castle builders found ways of letting an archer see even more of the outside of the castle.
