This window is made in the shape of a cross, so that an archer inside can shoot out to the sides of the window as well as in front of it. This window is in the Barbican gate at York, North Yorkshire.

Window like this were deliberately made just wide enough to shoot an arrow through. By the 15th century, guns had been invented, and the castle designers had to think of a way of keeping the windows as small as possible, to stop enemies shooting in, but be big enough for a hand gun to shoot out.
