Much of the monk's day centred on the cloister. This central courtyard was the heart of the abbey's daily life. Any part of the buildings could be reached from here. In the centre was a garden, the cloister garth, and on each side was a covered passage where monks could work.

The cloister was a working area, where books were copied and studied, an exercise area, a connecting way between the main buildings of the abbey and an enclosed garden.

A covered passage led from the cloisters to the infirmary, the abbot's house and the visiting abbot's lodgings.
