Location | Nottingham , UK |

Age | 57 |
---|
Diagnosed condition | paroxysmal A fib |
---|
Years with condition | diagnosed July 2004 but have had problems probably due to Afib for 10 to 20 years |
---|
Frequency of episodes | every 10 days (approx) |
---|
Duration of episodes | 6-48 hours |
---|
Event preceding first AF | training hard for black belt in tae kwon do when very stressed due to divorce |
---|
General health | diagnosed asthma 1992 , now thought breathlessness caused by A fib |
---|
Current state | good general health, problems tolerating exercise and feel perpetually tired when in Afib |
---|
Triggers | stress, vigorous exercise, recovery period after exercise, tiredness, alcohol, heavy meal |
---|
Current medications/side effects | 1. bisoprolol (cardicor) 1.25 to 2.5 mg per day
side effects: tiredness, depression, slow heart rate
2. Aspirin 300 milligram tablet daily |
---|
Past medications/side effects | 10 years on salmeterol and beclamethasone for supposed asthma - now discontinued
prescribed digoxin when first diagnosed - remained in Afib for 2 weeks until I discontinued tablets |
---|
Future plans | would like catheter ablation treatment eventually but cardiologist advises waiting until more research on use of the technique for Afib has been carried out.
Currently, main aim is to keep in sinus rhythm as much as possible. |
---|
Personal comments | I used to enjoy running but now running for more than a mile or two at a slow pace causes my Afib. I have a naturally slow heart rhythm from all my running (approx 45 bpm) and beta-blockers slow this down to the extent that they sometimes give me problems. I feel OK most of the time when I'm in sinus rhythm but in Afib I quickly get breathless, feel tired and find even climbing stairs, housework etc difficult. Sometimes get very depressed - suspect this is side effect of the beta blockers |
