Name | Murray |
---|
Location | GB |
---|
Age | 48 (first entry - now 53 and updated entry Feb '10) |
---|
Diagnosed condition | Paroxysmal AF |
---|
Years with condition | 3 |
---|
Frequency of episodes | two or three per week |
---|
Duration of episodes | 5mins to 12 hours |
---|
Event preceding first AF | Significant intake of alcohol at my sisters 40th birthday celebrations. |
---|
General health | Good, non smoker |
---|
Current state | Feel OK - but concerned for the future. |
---|
Triggers | Cheese (particularly cooked);
Red Wine;
Feb 2010 - nearly cured but require a DC cardioversion every 12-18 months. |
---|
Current medications/side effects | None - have been prescribed Flecainide but not taken it as yet.
Feb 2010 - still none but considering a touch up ablation following my original one in Jan 2007 which has been almost a success other than two cardioversions in three years. |
---|
Past medications/side effects | On original presentation I was prescribed Atenalol which caused more problems than I had otherwise so after a few weeks I came off them and have had no other antiarrythmics since. I take 10mg Simvastatin daily to control cholesterol.
Recently tried a total ban on alcohol for three months which made no difference. |
---|
History of surgery | Angiogram in 2001 - all clear.
Jan 2007 - left circumferential atrial ablation at the Radcliffe hospital in Oxford. Dr Yaver Bashir was EP. Almost perfect - needed 2 DC cardioversions in 3 years for atrial flutter on the left side of the heart so considering a "touch up." |
---|
Future plans | My doctors expect that I will have radiofrequency ablation at some future date - expected to be when the technology improves sufficiently to move the risk/reward ratio sufficiently in favour of the procedure.
Hope & pray! |
---|
Personal comments | I have come to realise over the years that AF is not a sprint - it is a marathon! So settle in to it, get used to it and prepare for the long haul! |
