Triggers | Stress, anger, high carb diet perhaps. Eating too much can cause stomach pressure which sometimes seems to trigger AF. In at least one instance I felt my diaphram contract right before a short AF episode. Exercising too hard can cause AF. Once had this occur after beating the heavy bag 'with spirit' during martial arts training. It wasn't diagnosed yet at the time. |
---|
Preventions | Propafenone 50 mg 3x daily seems to help, taking vitamins/minerals (potassium in particular), staying away from sugar. Moderate exercise (field hockey, weights) seem to generally help health and AF. |
---|
Current medications/side effects | Propafenone, aspirin 81 mg. No side effects that I know of. |
---|
Past medications/side effects | None |
---|
History of surgery | None |

Future plans | Perhaps ablation once the technique matures further and if I decide to get my PFO fixed. |

Personal comments | I have known for a long time that something was wrong with my heart however doctors were never able to pinpoint what was wrong. It wasn't until I had my first multi hour AF episode and I was rushed to the hospital that I found out what I had. That's when they started looking for trouble and found that I had a PFO. Thankfully it's small so it doesn't (yet) require surgery. I think that just knowing what it is that I have relieved some of the symptoms because I'm not stressed about it anymore. When it happens I'm still somewhat afraid but I'm not afraid of it happening, if that makes sense.
I noticed GERD in the list below. I was diagnosed with that 10 years ago and occasionally took OTC acid blockers like Zantac 75. However once I switched to a low carb diet and generally tried to avoid wheat my GERD disappeared entirely. I never wake up anymore with acid indigestion even if I eat right before going to bed. |
