Name | Shelby |
---|
Location | Huntsville, Alabama |
---|
Age | 72 |
---|
Diagnosed condition | Paroxysmal AF with mild mitral valve prolapse |
---|
Years with condition | Seven |
---|
Frequency of episodes | Initially infrequent (Quaterly?); lately one to eight days apart |
---|
Duration of episodes | Sometimes minutes, sometimes hours, sometimes days |
---|
Event preceding first AF | TIA (trans ischemic attack) probably caused by undiagnosed AF |
---|
General health | Good except for AF--doctyors say remarkable for age |
---|
Current state | Frustrated that I can not stay in NSR--threw a clot in December; |
---|
Triggers | Not known. Seems to happen most in my sleep.
Also sometimes is brought on by execise (dancing) and sometimes converts while exercising---seemingly without rhyme or reason |
---|
Preventions |
Wish I knew |
---|
Current medications/side effects |
Verapamil--360 mg/day (since end of Jan)
Coumadin--5 mg/day
Thyroxin--0.2 mg/day
Lipitor
Ambien |
---|
Past medications/side effects |
Amiodorone, 200 mg/day for seven years: Sun-sensitive, increasing lumbar congestion
No coumadin for last five years but back on since I had an embolism in December that luckily went to my maxillary artery (upper right arm). 'Unusual outcome' per the doctors--normally would result in a major stroke or death. |
---|
History of surgery |
Embolectomy, right arm--Dec 16, 2003
Nothing prior for over ten years |
---|
Future plans |
Hard to plan in this state.
Still working half time--plan to continue as long as I am needed and can contribute.

Personal comments |
Lucky to be alive, grateful for each beautiful day and for beautiful people.
Lost my beloved wife to pancreatic cancer five years ago. |
