Current medications/side effectsLanoxin. Atenolol. Coumadin. I have a coagucheck monitor which I can check my INR level and therefore able to adjust my coumadin level. The atenolol has taken away some of my "get up and go"
Past medications/side effectsNo previous medications. i understand i am on the State of the Art medication regime for Atrial Fib. Current regime in place for over three years. No trips to the emergency room with rate out of control for past three years.
History of surgeryNo surgery. Did have cardioversion twice when first diagnosed but after a few weeks rate went out of control again.
Future plansI understand a new anticoagulant drug has been tested in England and it is much safer than coumadin and would not require the type of monitoring that coumadin requires and side effects are almost none so i will be wataching this. I dont believe I would ever have any invasive therapy but the thought of never having to take medication would be nice.
Personal commentsWhen I was 45 I experienced my first episode of Atrial Fib and it was dx as lone A Fib. As i said above I was cardioverted twice and it didnt take. I then was in denial and didnt want to take the atenolol because I didnt want anything to slow down my life style. Once I decided to take the medication recommended by cardiologist and got used to my heart rate being irregular I then decide to change my life style. I exercised and got my weight down. I changed my eating habits and eat small meals with lots of fruit and veg and little meat some fish. My health is now good and I feel well. I dont have the energy i used to have due to the atenolol. The only difficulty I have is when out walking with my husband and he wants to go up hill I have to take it real slow because my heart rte will not kick in to high gear due to the atenolol.
