NameLiane
LocationRiverside, CA
Age45
Diagnosed conditionAtrial Fibrillation, ASD
Years with conditionat least 15
Frequency of episodes3-5 times/week
Duration of episodes1 1/2 hours - 18 hours
Event preceding first AFI never had a major event - I think I have had it for years - just thought it was stress.
General healthlight smoker, moderate drinker
Current statehave AF a lot
TriggersSeems like anything or nothing at all. Can't really pinpoint
much except stress, caffene and perhaps rest and maybe soy sauce or sashimi. I could be just sitting or driving, reading, cooking -- it just comes on.
PreventionsOn the days I go to the gym, I do not usually get AF. Other than that, nothing.
Current medications/side effectsSotolol 80 mg BID. (Too early to tell for side effects.)
Past medications/side effectsCoumadin
Plavix, lots of bruising
Atenolol - Did not control rate very well. (150bpm instead of 170+)
Diltiazem - Did not control rate unless I was absoutely still. If I moved, rate shot up into 170+. Also, made me feel as if I was foggy.
Flecainide - Could not sleep, eyes did not focus right.
Verapermil - Worked pretty well most of the time, still had breakthroughs at least once/wk of 140+ for +/- 4 hours.
Digoxin - I used with Verapermil.
History of surgeryASD closure 8/02
Right side RF ablation for flutter. 2/03
Left side RF ablation for Atrial Tachycardia 11/03 - Failed, procedure aborted due to too much fibrillation, no focal point.

Personal commentsI had an ASD closure on 8/5/02. There is a chance my AF will go away within 6 months. If after that point, I'm still feeling the same way I am going to pursue abalation. I have been lucky so far not have gone through all the terrible (seemingly unhelpful) drug regimens that so many people have done, but putting up with almost daily AF is very annoying and debilitating. I'm going to wait another three months and go from there. 7/7/03: I had a right side RF ablation and it was very succesful. I am now waiting until my 1 year anniversary for my ASD closure and hoping to get a left side ablation. 11/03: Had left side ablation -- failed. Starting Sotolol.
