Name | Peter |
---|
Location | Houston, Texas |
---|
Age | 65 |
---|
Diagnosed condition | Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation, [added 7-2005:] Atrial flutter |
---|
Years with condition | Unknown |
---|
Frequency of episodes | daily to weekly [added 7-2005:] Afib gone, aflutter controlled |
---|
Duration of episodes | 1 minute to 48 hours |
---|
Event preceding first AF | None identified |
---|
General health | Excellent |
---|
Current state | No improvement in AF [added 7-2005:] AF cured by ablations |
---|
Triggers | Caffeine, stress, bradycardia [added 7-2005:] Aflutter episodes have initiated during sleep, possibly by normal reduction in depolarization time occurring during sleep. |
---|
Preventions | None [added 7-2005:] After two PVI procedures, Afib is cured. I have had two episodes of sustained Atrial fluuter, now prevented by a low dose of Remeron. Off Remeron afer only 3 months, gained 20 pounds! |
---|
Current medications/side effects | Betapace 120/slow heart rate, 45-60, Coumadin 5.5/none [added 7-2005:] I am now on coumadin, Zocor and remeron. The remeron has caused weight gain and I am currently struggling to maintain my weight. The Remeron doesn't limit my exercise capacity like the antiarrhythmia drugs did. |
---|
Past medications/side effects | Toprol XL-50, Toprol-XL-100, low heart rate, Digoxin-0.25, Sotalol; low heart rate.
Apirin 325, none |
---|
History of surgery | [added 7-2005:] Cardiac ablations at the Cleveland Clinic Feb-2003 and Oct-2003. Afib appears to be cured. No episodes since then! After the ablations, I had two episodes of sustained atrial flutter that put me in the ER. The remeron is doing a good job of preventing flutter, as well as helping me sleep all night. I now realize that many of the restless nights that I had in the past were probably caused by Afib or Aflutter, |

Future plans | My Cardiologist is searching for effective drug therapy to control rate and hopefully reduce the frequency of AF episodes. Coumadin has been prescribed to ameliorate the risk of embolic stroke. [added 7-2005] My Cardiologist plans to keep me on Coumadin, Zocor and Remeron indefinitely. Now I am on Zocor and Coumadin only, no antiarrythmia drugs, I feel great! My Cardiologist is going to keep me on Coumadin forever, regardless of how long I go without symptoms. |
---|
Personal comments | I had an embolic stroke 1/11/02, no lasting effects. MRI showed an old stroke as well. The old one probably occurred while I was on Toprol-XL 50 and Aspirin 325; the recent one occurred while I was on Toprol-XL 100 and Aspirin 325. [added 7-2005] I had another mild stroke in Sept. 2002, while on Coumadin.
I suspect that I have had PAF for a very long time, but it only became frequent enough and severe enough to be diagnosed 6 months ago. |
