I am having occasional irregular beats since my ablation on Sept 19th, but no real episodes of fibrillation.
I was started on flecanide in Nov 07 and had not had any episedes since feburary this year. Prior to that I had been
having episodes of fibrillation daily for a year. My life was hell.
I feel very tired all the time and can fall asleep on a dime. I am due to come off the medication in December to see if the ablation was effective. I am sure that the monocor is the cause of my tiredness.
Past medications/side effectsI was initially started on sotalol. It worked for a while and eventually I was having episodes every few days.
I was then changed to digoxin and it worked for a few months before it no longer stopped my episodes.
I was given propafenone and it worked for me for a couple of years. I was then changed to cardizem. It made my ankles swell and made me constipated. It did nothing for my fibrillation.I had to be admitted to Er twice and later to the CCU for cardoversion. On one of my admissions I was given IV amiodarone. I had an anaphalactic reaction and almost died.
So flecanide was the medication that had the best results for me.
History of surgeryPVI ablation, transseptal on Sept 19t. Has conscious sedation which means I was able to feel the burining, but I would sort of sleep in between I spent six hours on the cath lab table. It was worth every minuite and I would do it again if necessary. I hated my life while I was held prisoner to these episodes. I work aa an Er nurse and there were times while on duty I felt I would pass out.
I am feeling very positive about this procedure and I advise anyone who has episode as I have described to speak with your family Md or cardiologist.
Future plansI will be taken off the flecanide in december 08 and also the coumadin( I think).
If I have no further episodes in the next month I will be taken off the monocor.
If I have further episodes I will require another procedure which will not be as long or complicated as the one I have just undergone.
Personal commentsAfib is a very debilitating condition for some people such as I experienced. I was feeling very depressed and like I had lost control of my life.
I want to let you know there is a cure in most cases that have no underlying medical condition.
to the person who withdrew due to pain after on hour. Give it another try. If you ask for more sedation they will give it . It is important that you are awake because as I am sure you are aware there are some serious risks involved,
The doc needs yu to tell him if the pain is to severe in case of injury to areas not meant to be ablated.
