Age | 65 |

Diagnosed condition | atrial fib |
---|
Years with condition | 1 |
---|
Frequency of episodes | had 6 episodes within 3 months |
---|
Duration of episodes | 18 hours |
---|
Event preceding first AF | too much, too vigorous exercise |
---|
General health | excellent |
---|
Current state | no episodes in 5 months, since I drastically lowered my exercise level |
---|
Triggers | too much, too vigorous exercise--with all but one of the a-fib episodes occurring about 7 hours after my most intense work-outs
The only time I had an episode that wasn't hours after an intense workout was after an extraordinarily stressful week.
Two of my episodes occurred about 10 minutes after drinking an afternoon cup of coffee, so caffeine may have been an additional trigger. |
---|
Preventions | Dunking my head in ice water seems to have worked the one time that I tried it. |
---|
Current medications/side effects | Doctor wanted me to take flecainide and metoprolol. After reading about these and other drugs of these types, I decided not to take them and see what would happen. Because I haven't had any episodes since I stopped exercising, I'm hoping I won't need antiarrhythmic or rate control drugs.
I'm on warfarin, though, but considering dropping it. |
---|
Future plans | Gradually increase my exercise level, keeping good records of everything I do. If I have another episode that appears to be related to exercise, I will scale back again. |
---|
Personal comments | I believe that we a-fibbers must learn all we can about this condition and specifically about our own condition. This database is a good place to start. If we can find ways to prevent our own episodes, we may be able to avoid the risks involved in drugs and operations. Doctors aren't much help in prevention, as their focus is, naturally enough, treatment after the fact. |
