NameMichael
LocationLondon
Age41
Diagnosed conditionParoxysmal AF
Years with condition3
Frequency of episodesvaries - latest 2 episodes only 4 weeks apart, previous to that usually ave 2 per year
Duration of episodesvaries - 5 mins to 6hours
Event preceding first AFExcess alcohol at works christmas party - thought i was having a heart attack!!
General healthaverage - ex-smoker [1 year], trying to cut out alcohol which seems to be the biggest factor!!
Current stateJust had episode last night, took Flecanaide tab & reverted to NSR whilst asleep
TriggersAlcohol - particularly red wine! Stress, late nights, anxiety,
PreventionsNormally just wait for NSR to come back - have been in casualty 3 times but AF has always reverted to NSR without drugs [apart from latest episode - so I'll have to wait for another episode and not take any Flec to discover whether I can still revert unaided!!

My fitness levels plummetted through my 30's and I put a lot of weight on. I'm regaining a reasonable level of fitness now, I cycle and run fairly regularly [3x per week]and this seemed to deter PAF until recently. I'm worried now that it's getting worse, but just have to see how it goes!
Current medications/side effectsFlecanaide if and when episode starts. No noticeable side-effects yet.
Past medications/side effectsAtenolol for 1 week after first episode - didn't seem to do anything.

Have had full range of tests [Echo, bloods, ECG, Scans 24-hour monitor etc] 3 times since 2003 and all have concluded no underlying cause.
History of surgeryMinor unrelated surgeries - 1989/2005
Future plansJust gotta get on with it. I have 3 young children and a wife getting over skin cancer, although she's dealing with it better than me! So just try to keep telling myself it ain't that bad!!

Coming from an Irish/Musical upbringing alcohol/smoking and late nights have always been a big part of my social life! Trying to resist overdoing the alcohol.
Personal commentsThis website is a great idea. It is always some comfort to know you're not alone with these things. My Cardiologists have been really good, although I do get the impression that AF and in particular PAF is regarded by the medical profession as more of a "nuisance" than a real condition!
