Name | Ellen Gilmartin |
---|
Location | NC, USA |
---|
Age | 68 |
---|
Diagnosed condition | Atrial Fibrillation |
---|
Years with condition | Diagnosed April 2000 - may have been in Afib earlier and not known |
---|
Frequency of episodes | Unknown - may have been experiencing Panic Attacks as well |
---|
Duration of episodes | Minimum 1 hour; maximum 10 hours |
---|
Event preceding first AF | No illness or major event that I was aware of |
---|
General health | Osteoporosis diagnosed 12/13/00; Reflux (non smoker & non drinker) |
---|
Current state | Started on Dofetilide (Tikosyn) Therapy on 10/9/00. Except for one 10 hr episode on 8/19/01, I have been in NSR for a year (10/10/01). |
---|
Triggers | Unknown |
---|
Preventions | Unknown |
---|
Current medications/side effects | Dofetilide (Tikosyn), Antenolol, Coumadin
Side effects: None. What I thought might have been a side effect was finally diagnosed at compressure fractures of the back. |
---|
Past medications/side effects | Sotalol; Flecainide; Verapamil; Lanoxin
I was in the hospital when EP put me on Sotalol and then Flecainide. These drugs did not agree with me - sick to my stomach, fatigue, etc.
Verapamil caused major constipation; other than that I did well on Verapamil - but I didn't like the idea of still being in AFib. |
---|
History of surgery | While on a moniter, I registered three to 4 second pauses. A Kappa 700 Series Dual Pacemaker was implanted at Duke Medical Center on July 17, 2000. |
---|
Future plans | Hopefully Dofetilide with hold tight the NSR and buy me some time until the BIG CURE becomes available.
I had considered AV Node Ablation. Half of the proceedure is already in place with the Pacemaker. The thoughts of no meds and no symptoms is very appealing. However, I do not favor being in permanent AFIB and no turning back. Despite what the medical world have told me, I cannot believe that permanent AFIB does not eventually affect the heart.
As far as Maze is concerned....I'm a wimp! |
