Name | Dan F |
---|
Location | Pleasantville, NY |
---|
Age | 58 |
---|
Diagnosed condition | Lone AF |
---|
Years with condition | 2/3 |
---|
Frequency of episodes | Average every 22 days |
---|
Duration of episodes | 2 - 5 hours |
---|
Event preceding first AF | none |
---|
General health | Excellent. No other problems |
---|
Current state | Episodes continue, but cause no problems |
---|
Triggers | None known. |
---|
Preventions | None. I've been off caffeine since second episode, but that doesn't seem to matter. |
---|
Current medications/side effects | Aspirin 325 mg. 1/day. |
---|
Past medications/side effects | Took cardizem for a month (prescribed by ER physician) before first appointment with a cardiologist, who took me off it. I have low resting pulse, and cardizem made it even lower. |
---|
History of surgery | None. |
---|
Future plans | First cardiologist told me to take Norpace; if that didn't work he'd double the dose; if that didn't work he'd go to something with worse side effects. I just got a second opinion from a highly-recommended cardiologist/EP, who said I shouldn't take anything except aspirin, and just see how it goes. I'm switching to him. |
---|
Personal comments | I'm fortunate to have no ill effects during my episodes, so the cardiologist said I don't need medication, and am definitely not a candidate for ablation. He said I don't have to restrict my activities, and can even have caffeinated coffee in moderation. He said the chances of a stroke for someone with my frequency, duration, and general excellent health were minuscule. Best doctor's appointment I've ever had! If episodes get more frequent, which they will as I age, or I don't convert, we'll look at other options.
