NameMary Anne R
LocationGlen Mills, PA
Age59
Diagnosed conditionLone Paraoxsysmal Atrial Fibrillation
Years with condition2
Frequency of episodesInitially every day. Now usually once a week
Duration of episodes24 to 36 hours
General healthExcellent health. Non-smoker. No more than 2 wines/day
Current stateBetapace-did not help. Tambocor helped initially however gradually increase to 100mg/2x's day. Did not help. Starting on Amiodarone.
TriggersMost common trigger is changing positions. If sitting for most of day, climbing stairs or slightest exertion can trigger episode. If busy all day walking, exercising, playing golf, sitting can initiate. However many other triggers....large meal, rolling over in bed, etc.
PreventionsSo far nothing has helped. I have tried all remedies mentioned in the AF chat rooms: bearing down, putting face in cold water, magnesium supplements, coughing, etc. I usually convert on my own but lately episodes have been lasting at least 24 hours.
Current medications/side effectsI started 2 days ago on Amiodarone (200mg/2X'sday). After one month I return to Cardiologist and he plans on cutting dosage to 100mg/2X's day. However, I have heard of the side effects and danger of long term usage and am scared to death. I did have a baseline bloodtest and chest Xday performed.
Past medications/side effectsWhen on Tambocor, I had weakness in my legs and have tremors in my hands but noticed these symptoms before Tambocor so possibly age factor.
History of surgeryNever had surgery. I'm 59 and have never been in a hospital overnight in my life. Maybe that's why I'm having a hard time dealing with this problem.
Future plansI plan on looking into alternative methods but hanging in and not letting this condition effect my very active lifestyle until a cure is discovered.
Personal commentsIf someone out there is on amiodarone with success and no horrible side effects I would appreciate hearing from them. This medication scares me.
