| History of surgery | Open heart surgery 23 years ago to patch an atrial-septal defect and to tidy up some leaky valves. I was almost the fittest person in the ward when I went in (staff included)and I recovered and was playing badminton in 8 weeks. 6 years ago I went for a regular cardiac check-up and the doctor said "Did you know you were in AF?". I did not but I sure realized it after - bump thump flutter pause thump tick tick - really crap beat. After further tests they decided it was well controlled (pulse resting 75) and that regurgitation back into the atria reduced the stroke risk so only aspirin was needed. |
