Large guest houses were built, so that important travellers, with their families, servants and horses would have somewhere safe to stay, whether on pilgrimage or on normal business.
The abbeys' infirmaries were the only source of medical help for people living in the area.
Few people outside the Church could read or write, and abbeys ran their own schools for novices, as well as copying and writing books.
