Monastic Life

Benedict led his friends to a place called Monte Cassino, and there they built a monastery, a group of buildings centred round a church, where a community of men or women could spend their life in praying and serving God.
Benedict lived there for the rest of his life. He worked out a set of rules for the monks to obey. He died in A.D. 543.
The rules he worked out were the basis for all monastic life during the Middle Ages.
