A Monk's Day

The day began at midnight, with the first service of the day. The monks went directly from the dormitory into the church.
The dormitory was at first floor level. The monks slept in their daytime clothes. Their beds were straw filled mattresses, with blankets and a pillow.
The younger monks' beds were between those of the older men, to help keep order.
There were two ways out from the dormitory. The night stair led directly into the south transept of the church. The day stair led down to the cloister.
At the south end of the dormitory was the monks' toilet or reredorter.
