The day began at midnight, with the first service of the day. The monks went directly from the dormitory into the church. |
The dormitory was at first floor level. The monks slept in their daytime clothes. Their beds were straw filled mattresses, with blankets and a pillow. |
The younger monks' beds were between those of the older men, to help keep order. |
There were two ways out from the dormitory. The night stair led directly into the south transept of the church. The day stair led down to the cloister.
|
At the south end of the dormitory was the monks' toilet or reredorter. |
