A Lay Brother's Day

Lay Brothers were poor men who could not afford to make a gift of land to the Abbey, and so would not be accepted as monks.
They lived in their own part of the abbey and went to some of the services in the church, but they also had their own work to do.
The Lay Brothers did most of the manual work in and around the abbey. They worked as builders, carpenters, plumbers, glaziers and tilers. They cooked and served the food.
