bailey The ground inside the walls of a castle.
beam A strong piece of wood, used for holding up floors and ceilings.
blacksmith Someone who makes things from iron.
bowyer Someone who makes bows.
contemporary Living or existing at the same time.
curtain wall A high stone wall surrounding a castle.
drawbridge A bridge which can be pulled up.
fletcher Someone who makes arrows.
garrison People whose job it was to defend a castle.
groom Someone who looks after horses.
mason Someone who cuts and shapes stone.
moat A deep ditch outside a castle wall, sometimes filled with water.
motte A hill of earth, the centre of the earliest castles.
palisade A wall made of upright tree trunks.
portcullis A gate which slides up and down to open and close.
undermine To dig under the walls of a castle until they collapsed.
